The National Federation of the Blind Supports BSC Games and Troopanum
The National Federation of the Blind proudly supports Troopanum and BSC Games by purchasing a site license for Troopanum. We interviewed Curtis Chong, Director of Technology for THE NATIONAL FEDERATION OF THE BLIND, regarding the NFB's decision to purchase
a site license for Troopanum. Chong stated...
Q) Curtis, there are plenty of games for the blind on the market. What is it about Troopanum that made you want to purchase a site license for the NFB?
A) Through the International Braille and Technology Center of the National Federation of the Blind, we strive to obtain "hands on" experience with Braille
and speech technologies for the blind. One of the technologies which have attracted our attention of late are games that are designed for the blind.
Troopanum is such a game. We opted to buy a site license for Troopanum because we often have occasions where a number of blind people are visiting our
Center and want to work together on this or that game. Troopanum is relatively quick to learn, and it is fun, we think, for people to compare notes when
trying to master the game. That is why we bought a license for more than one machine. We can demonstrate that technology for the blind can be fun, entertaining,
and instructive.
Q) What are a few features of Troopanum that you personally enjoy?
A) It is relatively easy to learn, and it doesn't require much thinking to play. It is a great stress reliever while being fun at the same time. Besides,
I enjoy shooting things down knowing that I'm not really hurting anyone. I very much like the sound effects, the explosions, and the zap of the laser
as I try to knock down alien ships. The stereo effects are awesome!
Q) Would you recommend Troopanum to the blind community and if so, why?
A) I would certainly recommend Troopanum to those members of the blind community who want a fun, exciting, and action-filled game that doesn't require
one to solve a puzzle before being able to play it. Why? Because I think we as blind people are just as much in need of games that allow us to have fun
while shooting things down as the sighted.
Q) Do you have any final comments about the game that you would like to share with the blind community?
A) Yes. Troopanum is a great and very inexpensive game. It's fun! It's fully nonvisually accessible, and while it may make no sense to people who can
see the screen, it's a riot for those of us who can't. Perhaps my only complaint is the fear of developing carpal tunnel syndrome because I have to bang
on the arrow keys so quickly. However, I have mitigated that by hitting the arrow key with two fingers, minimizing the movement of the wrist.
Yours sincerely,
Curtis Chong, Director of Technology
